The plumbing program prepares students for employment or advanced training in a variety of pipe occupations by focusing on broad, transferable skills, and stressing the understanding of all aspects of the plumbing industry.

Topics include pipe fitting, plumbing tools, types of valves, DWV (drains, waste, and venting), and potable water treatment leading to entry-level positions within the plumbing industry.

Basic entry-level skills in math, reading, and language must be attained in order to complete this program.

With additional training, Plumbing Technology graduates may become supervisors for mechanical and plumbing contractors.

Others may move into closely related areas such as construction management or building inspection.

The plumbing program enables students to enter a field that has great reward.

When a student first enters the plumbing program he or she is given an application to hold an apprentice card.

After completion students have the opportunity to either join the plumbers union or work for a company.

Some students take the program to add to other trades.

One year after holding an apprentice card a student can sign up to take the journeyman test, which is a state license.

J.F. Ingram State Technical College

J.F. Ingram State Technical College is the sole correctional education provider in the State of Alabama.

Today, ISTC is working to close the employment gap in Alabama by offering technical training in 20 career fields, adult education and GED preparation, and soft skills training essential for success in today’s workplace. 

Job Placement Coordinators work directly with Ingram graduates to utilize community resources and their industry certification to gain meaningful employment and stability. 

Courses Offered

Plumbing is a 60 semester hour program combining classroom theory with hands-on practice in the laboratory.

Requirements for the certificate of completion include four academic courses totaling 12 semester hours and all required career technical courses.

Students can also earn stackable short term certificates and industry certifications.

This program is designed to help students acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to prepare for successful entry-level employment in the plumbing industry.
