UA Local 130

About the School

The United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the United States and Canada, the parent Union of Local 130 in Chicago and Northeastern Illinois, has a long and proud history that goes back more than 100 years.

The Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Local Union 130 UA, with over 6,000 members, is one of the largest straight-line plumbing locals in the United Association (UA) International Union who represents 350,000+ building tradesmen across the United States and Canada.

Courses Offered

The purpose of the JAC is to train Apprentices and Journeymen of the Plumbing Industry, through classroom instruction and on the job field training.

A plumbers’ work consists of plan reading and safely, correctly and efficiently installing and maintaining plumbing systems.

These plumbing systems include underground water supply, storm water, sewer drainage, fixture installation and waste and vent piping both inside and outside of buildings, residential and service plumbing.

The length of the Apprenticeship program is 5 years.

During the first three years Apprentices work on the job 4 days per week and attend 1 day of classroom instruction.

During the fourth and fifth years, apprentices have on the job training 5 days per week and attend night school classes from September through June.

Founded in 2000, the Building & Fire Code Academy (BFCA) is a global training institution dedicated to providing code enforcement education to building and fire inspectors based on the International Codes, Illinois Plumbing Code, National Electrical Code, Life Safety Code and the legal aspects of code administration.

The mission of the Building & Fire Code Academy is to provide comprehensive and practical education in the administration, application and enforcement of building and fire codes.

Courses Offered

The Building and Fire Code Academy offers a four-year Plumbing Apprenticeship Education to supplement an apprentice plumber’s on-the-job training.

This education prepares Illinois apprentice plumbers for the Illinois state licensing exam, and the wide range of technical experience expected of them throughout their careers.

The Plumbing Apprenticeship Education is offered twice a year.

Each instructor affiliated with the Plumbing Apprenticeship Education is an Illinois licensed plumber with a broad range of field experience.

The apprentice candidates’ learning experience will be enhanced by the real-life knowledge and experience that instructors bring to the academic and practical instruction sessions.
